Industry and services in France – when is the employment card (Carte BTP) mandatory?

When is a work card (Carte BTP) mandatory?

France is one of the most important industrial and service markets in Europe. Polish companies are increasingly implementing contracts in the construction, industrial, and technical service sectors. To combat undeclared work and improve safety on construction sites, French law has introduced a mandatory construction worker identification card – the Carte BTP . In what cases is it required, and what should posting employers be aware of?

What is Carte BTP?

The Carte BTP is a personal identification card for workers working on construction sites in France. It contains personal data, the company name, and a QR code that allows labor inspectorates to quickly verify the legality of employment and posting.

When is a work card mandatory?

The card is mandatory for all workers present on a construction site , regardless of nationality or form of employment (employment contract, self-employment, temporary employment agency). This applies not only to the construction industry but also to industrial assemblers, electricians, HVAC technicians, service technicians , and other specialists performing technical work on the construction site.

🔧 Note : Work carried out in industrial halls, processing plants or logistics centres may also be subject to the Carte BTP obligation if it is considered construction or assembly work .

JHow to get a Carte BTP card?

The card is ordered online by the employer or their representative in France. To apply, you will need:

  • company identification data,

  • document confirming posting (e.g. SIPSI),

  • photo of the employee,

  • the tax identification number or SIRET of the French customer.

Card issuance usually takes a few business days and costs around €10-12 per card.

What threatens Carte BTP marriage?

The lack of a valid card during a construction inspection results in:

  • an administrative penalty of up to €4,000 per employee ,

  • the possibility of suspending work,

  • the company being included on the list of entities not complying with the regulations (which may prevent further operations in France).

Industry and technical services – when are other permits required?

In sectors such as energy, chemicals, heavy industry or logistics, in addition to Carte BTP, the following may apply:

  • permits for work in high-risk zones (e.g. ATEX, H0B0),

  • medical examinations recognized in France (or performed locally),

  • special occupational health and safety training – including French SST or Polish equivalent recognized by the client.

Summary

Companies carrying out assignments in the industrial and technical services sectors in France must carefully consider whether the scope of work qualifies for the Carte BTP requirement. Delegating workers without the required card can expose the company to severe financial penalties and the loss of the contract.
