What is a BTP card?

The BTP (Building and Public Works Card), also known as the "Carte BTP" in France, is a mandatory identification card required of all workers in the construction industry, including those posted to France from other European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) countries. This card aims to ensure compliance with labor laws and improve working conditions in the construction sector.
The information collected on the BTP card for posted workers typically includes:
  • Personal data: This includes the employee's name, date of birth, nationality and address.
  • ID Number: Each card is associated with a unique ID number for tracking purposes.
  • Work Authorisation: Information regarding the employee's legal authorisation to work in France, including any relevant work permits or visas.
  • Employer Information: Details about your employer, including company name, address and contact details.
  • Duration of posting: Information specifying the duration of the employee's posting to France, including the start and end dates.
  • Social Security: Details of the employee's social security, including contributions and benefits.
  • Compliance documentation: Any relevant documents demonstrating compliance with French employment law and regulations, such as contracts or agreements between employer and employee.
  • The BTP card serves as proof that a worker is registered and authorized to work in the construction industry in France, ensuring transparency and accountability in the sector. It also helps authorities monitor and enforce labor laws, including ensuring that posted workers receive fair wages, appropriate working conditions, and access to social benefits in accordance with French law.
Penalties for not having a BTP card by a posted worker

If it fails to do so, the company is liable to an administrative fine of up to €4,000 per employee (€8,000 in the event of a repeated infringement within 2 years), up to a total of €500,000 (c. trav. art. L. 8291-2).
